I finally got around to doing something I’ve been meaning to do for quite some time. Building a table saw.

I’ve been wanting a table saw for quite some time but I can’t afford a good one right now and spending $80 on the cheezy ones seems like a waste of money. A while ago I was thinking that I probably could make my circular saw into a decent table saw if I just mounted it upside down to a piece of plywood. Friends and family have told me I was stupid for entertaining such an idea. Well I built it yesterday evening and it works. Who’s laughing now?!? :)

Basically I took a scrap of 5/8″ MDF, coated it in a scrap of nice white laminate, routed out a slot for the blade, drilled holes in the circular saw base and matching holes in the MDF, and used my t-slot bit to cut a track for the fence. It’s very basic and won’t stand up to a lot of abuse bit it works pretty well and storage is a breeze. The blade loses 5/8″ of depth but I can still cut 2x? lumber which is probably about as big as I’ll need.

Tonight I might route out a slot for the mitre fence.

My biggest/only worry is that if the blade ever catches it might have enough power to rip the bolts through the MDF. I imagine the blade guard would pop back into place before it hit the floor but it would probably wreck the saw. Since this one was made out of scrap material it’s a bit small. I think for version 2 I’ll use thinner board (so that I get more height to my blade) and coat the bottom in sheet steel for some added strength and tear through resistance.

1000 Kilometers!

So on the way home from work on Friday I logged 1000 kilometers on my bike since I started riding to work in July. That’s about 40 trips and 43 hours sitting on my bike. It’s still a long trip on the way home but it’s certainly getting much better / faster.

Pocketmod

I love organizy things. A while ago I posted about the Hipster PDA. Today I came across the Pocket Mod which is even cooler. It’s a little flash utility that generates little 1-page fold-able books and you can customize them. Play with it. Very very cool!
